How to Quickly Remove Sharp Edges for Safer Sheet Metal Fabrication

Looking to dull edges on stainless steel sheet metal for safer fabrication? There are numerous ways to remove sharp edges before working with sheet metal, we just find this way the easiest.

3 STEP PROCESS:

Step 1 - Secure the sheet metal to prevent slipping.

Step 2 - Use your die grinder with a mounted point (we like shape W222) and simply run the point over the edge of the sheet metal. This process will round the edge of the metal and create a groove in the point.

Step 3 - Repeat. Run the mounted point over the other sides to break those sharp edges. As the groove in the mounted point wears, just move down the point to create a new groove, and so on.

RECOMMENDED MOUNTED POINTS:

Two points often used for this exact application are: W222 A54GFX Cotton Fiber and W222 Medium Rubber. The A54GFX Cotton Fiber point is faster cutting with longer life. The Medium Rubber point runs smoother with less chatter.

Both are self-dressing to the workpiece and help make it safer for workers who handle stainless steel sheet metal. Watch our video of this deburring process.

Mounted Points do come in many shapes for different applications. Download our Mounted Point Shape chart with RPM ratings to help figure out which shape is best for your application.

Make sure you are wearing the correct safety equipment; protective glasses or face shield and gloves during this process.
